Kayankerni Marine Sanctuary
Declared in April 2019 by the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) of Sri Lanka, Kayankerni Marine Sanctuary (KMS) covers 953ha of coral reefs, seagrass meadows and mangroves. It is located near the village of Kayankerni in the Batticaloa District of the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka.
This website provides information on the biodiversity, management and research in KMS and has been developed under the Community Livelihood and Biodiversity Recovery (COLIBRI) project with the financial assistance of the European Union.
This website is maintained with the support of Biodiversity Sri Lanka (BSL) under its “Life to Our Coral Reefs initiative that aims to enhance the resilience coral reef ecosystems, support community based management, and promote sustainable livelihoods for local communities in and around Kayankerni.
